Gabriel initially aspired to pursue a career in agriculture; however, circumstances led him in a different direction. After completing a two-year vocational program in ceramics at the age of 18, he began his professional journey at his family’s pottery business in Wensleydale, North Yorkshire. There, he specialised in producing terracotta birdfeeders and potpourri pots, and over time, developed advanced throwing techniques for larger pieces such as strawberry pots, wall pots, garden urns, and flowerpots.
Six years later, Gabriel established his own company, Yorkshire Flowerpots. Due to rapid growth, he expanded his team to eight employees and increased production to up to 200 tons of terracotta products annually. Subsequently, Gabriel accepted a position with Naylors Industries—a clay pipe manufacturer seeking to diversify its offerings by including flowerpots and ornamental garden products. In this role, Gabriel was instrumental in product design, development, and sales, as well as in sourcing and commissioning machinery to support a fully automated production system. During this time, Gabriel stopped hand-throwing, and Yorkshire Flowerpots was integrated into Naylors, a brand that continues to be in operation today.
Gabriel later contributed to the York Handmade Brick Company, helping to broaden its product range to include various brick specials and chimney pots. Thirteen years ago, seeking a return to full-time throwing, Gabriel joined William Blyth, specialising in the creation of chimney pots, garden pots, and roof tiles.
